A sheriff’s office in North Carolina said Wednesday that it has opened an investigation into allegations that a woman was gang raped and sexually assaulted by her brother-in-law.
The Asheville Sheriff’s Office said it received a report from a member of the public that a man raped a woman on Feb. 4.
The victim’s brother-law was in the area at the time.
The investigation is ongoing, according to a news release.
The woman told investigators that she was raped by the man and that her brother told her to get on the ground.
She told investigators the man was holding her against a fence when he pulled her pants down and touched her inappropriately, according the news release, which did not provide details of what the victim told investigators.
The Sheriff’s Department did not release any other details.
The Sheriff’s department said it will cooperate with the investigation.
The sheriff’s department has been plagued with sexual assault allegations.
A former deputy was fired last year after a report of unwanted sexual advances.
